Once I completed my training to become a qualified Counsellor I was drawn towards Counselling Young People.
This led me to start the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Adolescents with Hart Voluntary Action.
As part of this qualification I am required to complete 60 client hours working with 11—18 year olds and I am doing my placement with 121 Youth Counselling.
My experience of working in the service has been very supportive and welcoming. My journey with 121 started with an induction. This provided me with all the essential information that I needed to know about 121 and helped me to feel prepared to start working with adolescents. I received all the necessary paperwork, policies and procedures as well as information about training courses to complete. I felt fully supported by the organisation by the time I began to work with my first clients.
I am really enjoying working with Young People. Many arrive at sessions unsure and nervous of the Counselling process but the dedication and professionalism of the 121 team have the intention of creating a positive experience. The clients are willing to open up their ‘big emotions’ and share what is going on for them. Some clients enjoy some psychoeducation as part of their sessions to help them understand what is happening.
Working with Young People has been very rewarding and often challenging. They have helped me develop skills and experience in thinking about how I work as a Counsellor. My experience is that young people need to feel listened to and heard in a way that is different to their experiences with teachers and parents.
The administration team at 121 provide an excellent service of shielding and preventing external influences to impact my work and relationships with the client. This has enabled me to focus on my training and development as a Counsellor.
